Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; “art of the Muses“).
Music has been in my personal and humble opinion one of the best realizations, creations, discovery or achievement by humanity. It is a language not limited to boundaries. It transcends cultures, ethnicities and race. It is passion. It is expression. It is mystical, magical, hypnotizing and mesmerizing. It is like the life blood for inspiration and spirit. It can do all these wonders to a person as long as all the components come together just right for everyone’s specific set of ears.
The harmony which one can feel in a beautifully composed melody is unmatched. Now ‘beautifully’ here should not limit the kind of music to mellow and ballad type numbers. I mean the composition and the creation bit of a piece is beautifully done. That can be for ballads as well as heavy metal and pop. To each his own and as it best suits the mood.
The mood part is something that I can relate to for music very much so. There are some songs that I would want to listen to when I am on a high. Then there are those without which the festivities of a wedding simply cannot be achieved. Then of course there are times in the course of one’s life that they feel down and out for the count and the music is then accordingly the same.
Songs have the brilliant ability to take over a person. Get them immersed into the sound, the rhythm, lyrics tunes and brilliant instrumental bits.
Music is everywhere. It is a big part of making an award winning movies successful. It is the ultimate companion for some people during their work out routine. For others it is a way to cool off and go to their meditative place. And for others still it is inspiration. It is used to represent love, celebrate happiness and making new connections in life (the non-digital, non social network type of connection I mean – the human connection). It is used to build brands (the jingles). It is used to spread the good word. It is even used to win over electoral votes. It can represent victory or a struggle. It can welcome or push back. Music can be a tool. Heck it is even there with it’s medical usage (Music Therapy). It is the war chant for some militaries across the globe. It is the entrance for a huge celebrity. It is …. soul food.
To many people in many cultures, music is an important part of their way of life. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as “the harmony of the spheres” and “it is music to my ears” point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to
That is the best thing about Music. It cannot be limited to one thing or two. It has so many different aspects, different meanings and different realms to each different individual. It can be one and many things all at once. It can be one of the most powerful weapons at the disposal for humanity to continue being human.
Everybody needs a little song and dance in their life. It adds the required color and zest to what would have been an otherwise formal and maybe somewhat boring world.
